Anti-virus makers release correction to “Derek Jeter” virus

“All over the internet we were seeing Derek Jeter’s name appearing with phrases such as ‘Four rings’, ‘leadership’, ‘clutch’ and ‘317 lifetime average’ - we started seeing these groupings of words appearing millions of times over the last 2 weeks and naturally assumed it was a virus.”

Several leading vendors of Anti-Virus software, including Norton, McAfee and Symantec will be releasing new virus definition files to correct earlier releases designed to prevent the spread of the “Derek Jeter” virus.

A spokesperson for Norton said “When you see a certain grouping of words appearing everywhere in a short period of time it raises a flag.”

“All over the internet we were seeing Derek Jeter’s name appearing with phrases such as ‘Four rings’, ‘leadership’, ‘clutch’ and ‘317 lifetime average’ - we started seeing these groupings of words appearing millions of times over the last 2 weeks and naturally assumed it was a virus.”

In addition to vendors of Anti-Virus software, online blogging services said that they will need to double-check their SPAM filters for similar problems.

All companies said they hope to have the problem corrected before the indictment of Roger Clemens.

    I turned comments off because of the SPAM, but since then I put in a spam filter that seems to do a really good job (Jeter comments get through fine too… heh)

    I’m going to try opening the comments to everyone and see how that goes…
