The Royals are willing to pay any price to sign every pitcher who went 11-8 in 2006. Five bucks says you can’t name any other pitcher on the Royals staff.

The Kansas City Royals are not content to stay awful. With the signing of Gil Meche the Royals management is sending a clear signal to their loyal fans that the team is determined to become mediocre, and they will pay any price to get there.

Specifically, they are willing to pay about $11 million a year over the next 5 years for a middle-rotation starter with a 4.65 career ERA.
“He is an impact pitching talent who fits in with our plan for long term success. At 28, he is entering the prime of his career.” stated new Royals GM Dinty Moore. He then went out and signed Miguel Batista, who as a 35-year-old with a 68-79 record, also apparently fits into their long-term plan.
Some people might say that an orginization like KC should look to the future by adding young prospects and improving their scouting and player-development, but personally I like their plan to stock up on mediocre pitching in an attempt to claw their way out of the basemant of the most competitive division in basball.
Another theory is that the management just wanted to see somebody, anybody’s, name above Mike Sweeny’s on the salary chart.
