Sports Illustrated thinks a lot of the 1988 trade in which the Boston Bruins sent Geoff Courtnall and Bill Ranford to the Oilers for Andy Moog, and by “think a lot of” I mean that they think two completely different things about it.

With the trade deadline just days away Sports Illustrated has compiled a photo list of the great deadline deals that teams have made over the years. Photo 12 of 14 is the 1988 trade Boston made to send Geoff Courtnall and Bill Ranford to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Andy Moog.

“A veteran of three Cups in Edmonton, the disgruntled Moog was dealt to Boston on March 12, pairing with Reggie Lemelin to send the Bruins to the finals.”

Sounds like that was a good deal for Boston. But wait - for a completely different take on how that deal worked out we turn to… um… Sports Illustrated?

#2 on the list? Boston trading Geoff Courtnall and Bill Ranford for Andy Moog.

“Though Moog teamed up with Reggie Lemelin to lead the Bruins to the Finals the following year against his old team, it was Ranford who stole the show.”

What I love is how the quote from the second article seems to be just a continuation of the quote from the first article.

Yeh, but how did Sport’s Illustraed feel about the trade.

Pissed? I would be too if I was a fan of Andy Moog, you should definitely complain about it...
