Leafs fans furious at Sundin’s loyalty to team, city

Mats Sundin - like the Maple Leafs - is not going anywhere this year.

“I have always believed I would finish my career as a Toronto Maple Leaf so the actual request was still a very difficult one for me to contemplate,” Sundin said in a statement issued by his agent J.P. Barry

“I cannot leave my teammates and join another NHL club at this time, I have never believed in the concept of a rental player. It is my belief that winning the Stanley Cup is the greatest thing you can achieve in hockey but for me, in order to appreciate it you have to have been part of the entire journey and that means October through June. I hope everyone will understand and respect my decision.”

The display of loyalty to his teammates, the Maple Leafs organization and the city of Toronto was met with mixed emotions by fans.

“Why the {expletive} would he want to stay here?” asked one Leafs fan incredulously “The team sucks and it’s not like the city is all that great - the weather’s been pretty {expletive} and the traffic on the 401 is {expletive} awful.”

“Now Anaheim - there’s a nice place to play hockey. Nice weather, the team’s going to the playoffs… I really think Sundin would love it there.”

“Hey, if I had a chance to leave Canada until June you bet your {expletive} I’d take it.”
