Don Cherry decided to use his Coach’s Corner soapbox on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada to offer his opinion about the “Vote For Rory” phenomenon.
Apparently, he doesn’t like it.
During the segment, Cherry said that “the league is not a joke” and that “this is a joke”. He also stated that the fans voting for Fitzpatrick were “kooks” and that they are laughing at the blue-collar blueliner, not with him. Cherry then wrapped it up by referring to Fitzpatrick as a “jerk”, and stating that he would be remembered as a freak.

Cherry, of course knows something about how out of control these types of things can get, having been ranked 7th by fan voting in CBC’s Greatest Canadian Survey. He came in one position ahead of Sir John A MacDonald - the founding father of Canada, and it’s first Prime Minister.

Being a Canadian survey, first place of course went to the guy that implemented socialized medicine.
The “Vote For Rory” story, by the way, was recently covered in the LA Times. For the record, the LA Times Sports sections are, in order:
Now at first glance you might think that list is alphabetical - it’s not. Hockey actually is listed below High School sports. I’m just pointing that out…
