Wayne Gretzky gambling with Rick Tocchet again

I can’t believe a sports journalist had the willpower to write a story about Rick Tocchet rejoining the Coyotes and not title it something like “Gretzky gambles on Rick Tocchet again”… oh what the hell - I’ll do it for him.

Phoenix CoyotesAh there’s just something about Rick Tocchet that makes the Gretzky want to take a gamble. After a prolonged absence from the Phoenix Coyote’s bench while he was investigated for illegal gambling, Rick Tocchet has rejoined the team as an assistant coach.

“Tocchet was sidelined — by an official leave of absence — for the length of a too-long inquiry by law enforcement and the NHL” writes SI.com scribe Jim Kelly.

“too-long inquiry”? Remind me not to ask Jim Kelly his opinion of Pete Rose if I ever meet him.

Kelly then adds “{NHL Commissioner}Bettman extended the period even after the police were finished largely because Tocchet didn’t even have the good sense to stay away from a poker tournament in Las Vegas while his NHL future was still in doubt”

Well, one thing you have to say for Tocchet - he’s apparently a genius. “Man, being investigated for illegal gambling activities is really stressing me out… think I’ll go unwind in Vegas, maybe hit a poker tournament to relax.”
